Installation of a Speed Camera Along West Street

On June 28, 2019, I was happy to join the Department of Transportation’s Commissioner Polly Trottenberg and other colleagues for a press conference along West Street in Lower Manhattan to announce the installation of a new speed camera on the busy thoroughfare near two elementary schools. The School Safety Camera bill I sponsored in the Assembly was signed into law this legislative session.
Under the new law, effective July 11th, the speed camera’s hours of operation will expand to a year-round program on weekdays between 6am until 10pm, with an overall expansion of cameras from 140 to 750 school zones throughout New York City by June of 2020. Since the pilot program began in 2014, research shows a 60 percent reduction in speeding where cameras are installed, helping to ensure safer streets for pedestrians in school zones.
