  Reproductive Freedom

If anything has made clear that choice is hanging by a thread, it is the changes in the U.S. Supreme Court which have shifted the balance of power away from the Roe v. Wade precedent. It is crucial that we not sit back confident with the current situation. Just as we fought decades ago for our right to choose, we must fight to protect this right.

Today, that struggle includes enduring access to contraceptives. As author of New York State's landmark law which mandates that prescription insurance plans cover the cost of contraceptives, this is an area of key concern for me. It defies common sense that foes of abortion do not support the use of or public funding for contraception, as they are clearly the most effective means of limiting abortions.

It is important that women have control over their bodies and are able to access the resources and technologies to make the most appropriate reproductive decisions for themselves. This includes having access to processes such as in vitro fertilization, which also finds critics among those who are opposed to abortion. Clearly, a healthcare system that provides coverage for Viagra but not reproductive technologies is biased and short-sighted.

Just as everyone should have access to the resources necessary to make the healthcare decisions that are best for them, people must have the tools to make the best reproductive health decisions for themselves.
